What to do first after a loss in Rhode Island.
You do not have to empty the house this week. These are the calm, practical steps that protect the family—and the estate—before anything is sold or hauled away.
This is not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for an attorney. It is the household side of the first weeks: what to pause, what to gather, and who to call so grief does not turn into a rushed sale.
If you are a realtor, attorney, or funeral director sharing this with a family, you are welcome to link to this page from your own resources list.
Seven things that help more than a dumpster.
Slow down the household decisions
Do not sell jewelry, gold, or furniture in the first days. Pause door-to-door buyers and anyone offering to “just take it all.” Once it leaves, you cannot get a fair look at what it was.
Secure the home
Lock the property. Account for keys, cars, and spare entries. Hold mail if you can. A vacant house after a death is an easy target, and it is also where the papers and valuables still live.
Gather papers before anything is shredded
Wills, insurance, account statements, titles, tax records, and personal correspondence should be set aside—not bagged with the recycling. We can shred later. We cannot reconstruct a document that already went out.
Talk with the right legal help
An estate or probate attorney can explain executor duties, who may act, and what has to wait. If you do not have one yet, that is a normal first call—not a failure to “handle it yourselves.”
Protect jewelry, coins, and other valuables
Know what you have before anything leaves the house. A short appraisal conversation, plus help with gold, silver, and coins or estate jewelry, prevents cheap offers and family arguments.
Decide what the house itself needs
Sale, keep, downsize, or clear? The contents plan should match the property plan. Liquidation, an estate sale, or a cleanout are different tools—not the same job.
Bring in help that stays with the whole transition
One coordinator for valuables, contents, shredding, referrals, and the physical clear is usually kinder than a dozen disconnected vendors. That is the work we do. See how transitions work.
You do not have to run this as a project.
